Rare gold coins could be worth over $10 million
One day a few months ago, a California couple was strolling along a well-worn trail on their property of many years when they noticed something sticking out of the ground. When they stopped for a closer look, they discovered the rim of a rusty old can. They dug it up and lugged the heavy can back to their home, where they opened it and discovered a collection of rare and perfectly preserved gold coins.
Needless to say the couple quickly returned to look for more cans. With the help of a shovel and a metal detector, they eventually located a total of eight cans and over 1,400 coins. These were all US coins dating from 1847 to 1894. The couple said that during the process of searching for more coins they realized that the treasure trove was situated exactly 10 paces due north of a funny-shaped rock. The rock had no doubt served as a marker for some individual who never managed to come back for the treasure. However, that person’s misfortune turned into a huge boon for the couple, who had been struggling with their finances lately.
In order to avoid attention from the media, the couple has chosen to remain anonymous. However, some of their coins were displayed by the numismatics firm Kagin’s Inc. at the recent American Numismatic Association’s National Money Show in Atlanta at the end of February.
Kagin’s has had all the coins authenticated, graded, and certified by the Professional Coin Grading Service of Irvine and concluded that the collection could sell for upwards of $10 million. According to experts, this makes the find the most valuable collection of coins every unearthed on American soil.
The couple currently plans to sell most of the coins to help them stay in their home and to enable them to donate to various charities. What will they do with the rest of the coins? The husband reports that he stuck them right back in the ground. “It’s safer than a bank!” he said.
